The Second Triennial Codes in Parallel
August – October 2024, Western Australia
Inspired by the theme “Codes in Parallel”, IOTA24 (Indian Ocean Craft Triennial) invites audiences to decode the layered languages and symbolism embedded within contemporary craft. Through this thematic lens, the exhibition foregrounds diverse expressions and interwoven narratives as artists translate cultural codes into material stories.
At the heart of IOTA24 is the international exhibition, showcasing the work of more than 30 craft artists and groups hailing from six regions around the Indian Ocean. These core installations form a rich dialogue across borders, reinforcing connections rooted in craft and cultural exchange.
Complementing the central exhibition is Futuring Craft: The Value of Craft, an international conference held from 3–6 September 2024, presented in collaboration with Curtin University. This conference explores how craft’s symbolic languages evolve in relation to technology, sustainability, and global contexts.
Supporting the main program is the festival program, a network of exhibitions and events hosted by craft artists, galleries, art spaces, and collectives across Western Australia. These community-driven activations resonate closely with the "Codes in Parallel" theme, creating resonant and accessible craft experiences.
To help visitors engage with the full breadth of activity, the IOTA24 Festival Guide is available, a free, 96‑page program detailing exhibitions and events occurring across WA during August to October 2024
