THE INAUGURAL INDIAN OCEAN CRAFT TRIENNIAL CURIOSITY & RITUALS OF THE EVERYDAY
September - November 2021, Western Australia
Based on the theme of ‘Curiosity and Rituals of the Everyday’, exhibitions and events took place in Western Australia from September to November 2021.
Through stories and conversations IOTA21 explored our innate curiosity and the rituals that connect us through the medium of craft and the handmade, at home and across the ocean.
Exhibition partners John Curtin Gallery and Fremantle Arts Centre staged the central exhibition that showcased the exemplary and ambitious work of the lead international and Australian artists.
Opening events included an exceptionally colourful celebration of Indian Ocean cultures presented by Fremantle Arts Centre, and in collaboration with Curtin University the 'Futuring Craft' conference and the fashion event 'Curiosity and The Cloth'.
In complement, the festival program of exhibitions and events was presented by partners across Perth and Western Australia - including major institutions, to small artist-run collectives, regional galleries, local government arts facilities, and craft-specific workshops and studios.
We thank Lotterywest for their support of the festival program, our state government for their support of IOTA21 and all our partners who helped make IOTA21 possible.
