Description

A group exhibition that explores our connectivity with oceans and lands, inviting both artists and viewers to reflect on the importance and role the Leeuwin Current has on our southern landscape.

Through the cooler waters of the Indian Ocean, the Leeuwin Current both meanders and eddies along the Western Australian coastline as it has done since the middle Eocene. In its body of warm, tropical water an array of coral larvae and other marine creatures make their way southwards and around into the Great Australian Bight. The warmer waters allow marine life to live further south than what would usually be expected.

The Current’s maritime influence extends beyond its waters to the southern shores affecting sea levels, weather, topography and biology over millennia – an integral part of our environmental narrative. People are also drawn to living, creating industry and trade-routes along its borders.
