About
Yarrenyty Arltere Artists is about family and community. Is it about celebrating the innovation, creativity and diversity of Yarrenyty Arltere Town Camp artists. It is about having a localised art program that is open to all Yarrenyty Arltere Town Camp community members. It is about creating a safe and non judgemental environment in which people can work, access services, plan for the future. It is about working together to create a successful and healthy enterprise. An enterprise that is strong because of the people that work there, that is strong because of the social, emotional and cultural capital that is shared daily.
This vibrant dynamic art centre located in the heart of Alice Springs in the Larapinta Valley Town Camp is all about the people that work there daily, their families, their community, their culture. It is about a great future in which the Yarrenyty Arltere Artists are directing for themselves!
Artist Statement
‘Tjip Tjip’: Little Birds Talking Story
When we make this work, we always share stories. It’s how we remember. Like Dulcie remembering about walking with little billycan collecting bush foods and hearing all those little birds singing in the bush, ‘tjip tjip’. And Marlene remembering everyone calling out ‘butcher butcher’ when they came to see her father. He was butcher there at Amoonguna. He was an activist too, and a painter. That made Dulcie remember catching the bus all the way to Amoonguna from Jay Creek to go to school. All the way from one side on Alice Springs across the other side cause no little school there in Alice Springs back then for Aboriginal kids.
Every day when we sew, we tell story with each other. We talk remembering story, olden day story, and we talk stories that help us to work out problems. Like the little birds on these tins, up and down, same as us coming every day to the art room, and ‘tjip tjip’, talking together.
