About

Dias Prabu attended the Master's program at Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta and graduated in 2012, and continued to live and work in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

His professional artist career began after he won the best winner of the national mural competition in 2014 initiated by National Gallery of Indonesia with the theme of “Indonesia’s culture in the future”.

He later travelled to several provinces in Indonesia such as North Sumatera, South Sulawesi, Natuna Islands, to learn and research about historical traditions and socio-cultural context, especially with the theme of the traditional spice trades of Nusantara. He then transferred it into his drawing batik and mural artworks. He wanted to reconnect things from the past with what is happening today and what will be the outcome in the future, narratively through his drawing batik works.

Dias Prabu has presented solo shows, group exhibitions and drawing batik workshop in Australia and the USA (2020-2023). He is currently preparing the Australian Art Tour 2024 with his art collective called “Kultura Collectiva” including his solo show at The Artspace Mackay QLD.

Artist Statement

All of my works are inspired by the historical context from the past, memories, socio-cultural and when old traditions in Nusantara then meet with the “nowadays” culture in a narrative way. Those things are kind of my free pass entering the window of the past which can also be reopened in the present and the future.

In the Eastern culture, we believed that human have a circle of life from birth moment until death. Between traditions: in the circle of life and death, is the title of my site-specific drawing batik installation, which already taught me a lot about life and hopefully for everyone. The artwork that so much inspired from the Javanese culture, the old Melayu culture from Natuna Islands, the Bugis and Macassan sailor story, or even the totems from Papua.

Mostly, I gain those inspirations when I am going to some provinces or met the people who closed to their old cultures. Every process that I have done of it, just like re-reading and re-imagining from what was my ancestors done many years ago, with the continuation to re-birth it again in the new level through my works.
