Bappaditya Biswas

Born 1978, Bengal. Lives and works Kolkata, West Bengal, India


Bappaditya Biswas graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (Kolkatta) in 2000 by a one year residency at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia.

With Rumi Biswas he set up 'bai lou' in 2002 to explore loom finished textiles. Bai lou has been awarded the UNESCO Seal of Excellence for innovation for a double cloth weaving technique in which metallic sequins are inserted into small pockets during weaving.

Weftscapes was first developed and shown at the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa in late 2019/20. In contrast to his dramatic, abstract and oversized work with Jamdani,during COVID lockdowns he developed new techniques for painting with natural dyes and mordants, re-claiming traditional chintzback to India. In 2022 he was one of 75 prominent artists, designers and crafts workers invited to exhibit in the Sur Santi exhibition at the National Art Gallery of India.
